About Us - History

Carroll & Carroll, Inc. reflects the desire of a long-time local family to stay rooted in the place it loves. The essential characteristics that attracted our forebears to the area in 1896 still remain. We came to be real estate appraisers through a history of involvement with the real estate brokerage community and we still feel an affinity for that group.

Vacant land and residential appraisals were our beginning. Those remain the bedrock of our practice. Cindy Carroll's advent to the firm in 1986 heralded the beginning of a well organized and productive residential division that remains second to none. It was Ernie Carroll's work in the early 1980's with property owners affected by takings for I-75 that led us into the specialized field of condemnation appraisal work. Today, appraisals made in connection with litigation are an important and growing segment of our practice. Ernie also lead us into commercial appraisals. That practice is carried forward by Ray Carroll who heads a commercial division that continues to expand.

The mission of Carroll & Carroll, Inc. is to translate our unique experience of the history, geography and economy of southwest Florida into appraisals that are trusted and reliable.

The Founder, J. E. "Ernie" Carroll

J. E. "Ernie" Carroll, was executive vice president of the Naples-on-the-Gulf Board of Realtors from 1968-1973. Subsequently, he entered the real estate business and pursued the appraisal profession.

From 1974-1984 Ernie ran the appraisal division of John R. Wood & Associates, Inc. In 1975 he was joined by his son, Ray. They practiced together until Ernie's death in 2002.

In 1975 Ernie was the Naples-on-the-Gulf Board Realtor-Associate of the Year.

Ernie's experience with the Realtor organization at local, state, and national levels was influential in his decision to become active in the Appraisal Institute; then an institute of the National Association of Realtors. In 1978 the Appraisal Institute conferred on Ernie the RM designation. The Society of Real Estate Appraisers followed suit with its SRA designation in 1979.

The Southwest Florida Chapter of the Society of Real Estate Appraisers elected Ernie President in 1982, and in 1983 he was elected to a three year term as Director of Chapter II of the Appraisal Institute. He served as a Governing Counselor of the Appraisal Institute during 1984-85.

Ernie Carroll remained active in the Naples Area Board of Realtors and was the 1988 Realtor of the Year.

In anticipation of Federal real estate appraisal regulation, Florida's Governor appointed Ernie to serve a four year term (1988-92) on the Appraisal Sub-committee of the Florida Real Estate Commission, later to become the Florida Real Estate Appraisal Board. After his term and until his death, Ernie continued to serve as a member of the Probable Cause Panel of the Florida Real Estate Appraisal Board.

Ernie remained active in professional appraisal organizations and during 1991 served on the Florida Appraisal Institute Chapter Unification Committee. In 1992 he was elected to a two year term as Chapter Representative to Appraisal Institute Region X. Throughout this period he served the local chapter and Region X as liaison to the Real Estate Appraisal Board.

Ernie Carroll was a long-time member of the Professional Standards Committee of the Naples Area Board of Realtors and of the Marco Island Area Board of Realtors. Ernie was professional, genuine, and reliable.
